Bringing back the magic: on the "Cinemas of India" restorations

In the new issue of The Caravan, I celebrate the NFDC “Cinemas of India” DVDS and do a composite review of four films in the series: Sudhir Mishra’s Dharavi, Saeed Mirza’s Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro, Shyam Benegal’s Suraj ka Satvan Ghoda and Govind Nihalani’s Party (which I also wrote about here). Full piece here.

(Also see: this post about Mirza’s Arvind Desai ki Ajeeb Dastan. I’ll be writing more on some of these films in the coming weeks.)

  2. Sai: thanks, but NFDC doesn't seem too interested in providing supplements at this point. Might have been interesting for them to tie up with Harper Collins to sell copies of the Jaane bhi do Yaaro book with the DVDs!

Something I didn't mention in the piece: it's a pity that most retailers don't appreciate what high-quality DVDs these are. Every time I go into a Planet M or Musicland I see these DVDs carelssly placed with all the other old films in the standard alphabetical order. It would have been nice if, at least for a couple of months, the big stores gave them a separate display.

  3. Jai - nice piece. Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda was a superb film. How convincing Rajit Kapur was when he said, "kahaniyon main sapnon ki tarah asliyat ko modhkar hum apni manokamna jo poori kar lete hai. kahani toh satya aur asatya ka ajeeb mishran hai jiske jariye insaan jo hai jo banna chahta hai joh ban sakta hai, sab ek hee madhyam se darsha sakta hai" and then Nina Gupta comes from behind. That scene seemed like a dream, which can scare me. And then the horse and movie coming to an end. Great way of ending a film.

  4. oh love the entire NFDC collection.. Have been keeping a tab and picking up each of the movies.. And you are right.. what we need to appreciate they finally someone has woken up and decided to save the dying movies. these are some of the most brilliant movies made but were very difficult to get and i had some really shitty prints of mosear baer.. vcds that i had picked so i could watch these movies.. but the remastering is brilliant and clearly shows the difference.. my next in line is pestonjee..

  5. somewhere on your blog.. i did read about the fact that there is not enough movie literature in this country specially in hindi.. just thought would pass on some interesting bit that i came across.. a friend father a professor with the allahabad university.. extremely obsessed with movies.. and has even tried his hands in his good old days living in bombay and doing the typical bollywood writer struggle.. He even now writes a lot of books on movies and his latest was released in the Delhi book fair this year.. his name is LALIT Joshi and the book is called Bollywood Path - Vimarsh ke Sandarbh.. Not sure where you will find it.. i had to borrow the same from my friend who got a publishers copy from her father.. very interesting stuff..

  6. Tanaya: that's very interesting to know, thanks - will try to find out about availability. I recently did a short profile piece about Mihir Pandya's Hindi book Shahar aur Cinema: Via Delhi.
