Online misdemeanors - IBN Live video

Okay, my first attempt to put a video up on this site has failed miserably, so I'll provide a link instead. IBN Live had interviewed me a few weeks ago for a story about indiscretion in the virtual world - Orkut stupidity, etc (something I also wrote about here). I never got to see the story telecast, because it didn't appear in the slot it was originally scheduled for - this is something that's happened with me before and it gets frustrating (especially when one has got ailing grandmothers all excited, waving cheerleader pom-poms at the TV screen). So I was pleased to discover a short video on this page on the IBN website. Take a look - I come on around the 1-minute mark.

  1. I really liked your views. Yes its easy to get carried away when orkutting or blogging. But at the same time it is very important to keep your personal information personal. Thanks for reminding us.

  2. A tip about embedding the video here: Just copy the "embed" text provided in the video page. Paste the text in the edit HTML of this post. Put it at the end of this post. Republish the post. That's it!

BTW, The int was quite good! My fav blogger is proving his worth in the blogging community! Congrats!

  5. Madhuri: like I mentioned in that Orkut post, it's quite gobsmacking that reasonably intelligent people so often "forget" that Orkut scrapbooks are public forums.

Space Lover: thanks. I followed the "embed video" procedure but it didn't work - said "Plugin Required" or something such. Maybe there's a format issue, because there hasn't been any problem with videos from YouTube.com.

Sonia, Anon: have put a couple of photos on the blog in the past, but ya, videos are a different ball game. This was the first TV interview I was okay with putting up here - earlier ones had me stuttering all over the place and using phrases like "the human condition"!

  6. It's quite strange. It should be there. I had also posted an IBNLive video here. Another tip: Don't jump to compose mode after putting the embed code in the HTML page. Otherwise, the code will disappear. Republish the post directly from the HTML mode. Hope that works. :)

  7. but what about the whole connecting-to-people-you-would-never-normally-connect to thing...? I mean people you know, used to know, have forgotten about... etc. etc.

  8. Space Lover: I tried doing it in "Edit HTML" mode and publishing. The video was displaying fine on Firefox but not on IE. Also, even in Firefox, the size was too big - it screwed up the sidebar. Think I'll keep it like this for now, but if you have any other tips (for IE) let me know.

Anon: didn't understand the comment. This was a story about the misuse of social networking, not its benefits.

  9. Ha ha! Ailing grannies and pom-poms...

While some level of anonymity is good, having credibility online does require providing some details about yourself.
