Innocent question

Is it accepted practice to shorten Valentine's Day to "VD" when sending text messages/emails? Example: "May your VD be luminous and joyful" or "May every day be VD for you", or "VD well, little brother". More importantly, will the recipient get the joke?

  1. Accepted practice? Surely, you jest?

No, it is not accepted practice. It is mandatory.

  3. Nath: Glad someone else feels that way.

B.Ray: Veni, VD, Vici? The advantage of the girlfriend's birthday being the day before Valentine's is that you can ignore the festival hoopla (since everyone know that celebrating on consecutive days is bad for the soul).

  7. i never get jokes, and i didn't get this one either. but VD somehow expands into Violet Death in my head.

  8. Anon: VD is a sweet, friendly little acronym for "venereal disease" (latterly known as "sexually transmitted disease" or STD - hmm, scope for more punning there). But don't fret, "Violet Death" will do just as well...

  9. There used to be a PSA in America in the 60's. American Greetings has made it into a musical Valentine's Day card:
    VD is for Everybody

  10. The thing to look out for is any sort of silence/odd facial expression/squirming/lag in responding on the part of the recipient of your VD greeting.

Then you may want to consider adding this person to your "let's keep it platonic" list.

  11. HVD is the most commonly used abbr for wishing on Val day. But use VD and no one would get your joke. Or the wishes, I doubt.

  14. >The advantage of the girlfriend'sbirthday being the day before Valentine's...

At the risk of sounding tacky, I should mention that having your anniversary right after Valentine's is the best case situation. Because not only do you get to do the gift thing once but you can hit all the after-Valentine's sales and save up for the next cricket pay per view.

Savannah: did you get the tone of the post? It's "meaner" than anything you said in your comment. VD is "venereal disease" btw.
