He was not disappointed with the fishing. On the other hand, what he found, was desolation, ruined communities, sylvan country, and broken Russians reeling with alcoholism, the collapse of communism leaving them defenceless and unemployed, and environmental burdens on a colossal scale. Plus he earned their disdain by often tossing back the fish he caught.
