The sections on Bernard nearly ruined the book for me. They were dull (which could have been avoided if they were shortened), too disconnected from the rest of the story, and the scene at the Indian brothel was unnecessarily disturbing (general reference would have sufficed).
But, like most, in the end, the first 2/3 were so enjoyable that you are almost forgiving. Nonetheless, I didn't end the book with the same enthusiasm as I was expecting..Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8204542.post-76054325596052054902011-01-17T21:14:59.621+05:302011-01-17T21:14:59.621+05:30Not a very realistic display, I agree. Everybody was racist in that year, probably educated people tooAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8204542.post-1137506658226592652006-01-17T19:34:00.000+05:302006-01-17T19:34:00.000+05:30I too felt some disappointments regarding this boo...I too felt some disappointments regarding this book. The American military men were made caricatures, inacurately shown as all the same in their racism. I know many former soldiers of that era, and none is a racist or would have behaved as they did in the book. The racism did exist, but only with the ignorant and uneducated among those serving in the war. Andrea Levy seems to be on the most tenuous ground when speaking of
Americans. That is her area of least expertise.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
