I didn't even notice the tonal inconsistencies that you pointed out, the story kept me so engaged. Of course, living as an expat who was once at least a bit "hi-fi" back in India, I did a lot of ruminating on the basti kids I studiously ignored or the maids who cleaned our flats for a pittance and took home the leftover food.
