And some are visually impressive too, like one named "Bou churi" (Stealing the wife). Interesting narrative, rural Bengal, twist in the tale , only issue Ray might have had that it was rather unkind to some of the rituals of the Brahmo Samaj. Wish a good filmmaker takes it up. Nothing much to say except I love your review, especially the sentence Arnav Das Sharma quotes above.Unmanahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02430139387595895191noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8204542.post-64732428241867694562012-03-17T21:01:39.163+05:302012-03-17T21:01:39.163+05:30"The story is a constant reminder of how wome..."The story is a constant reminder of how women in conservative societies can simultaneously be the repositories of a house’s honour and prisoners within it; reverence and subjugation run hand in hand."<br /><br />This observation is spot on. For further elaboration this theme, I think you should read Tanika Sarkar's brilliant collection of essays on social history, Hindu Wife, Hindu Nation.Arnav Das Sharmanoreply@blogger.com
