I wonder how much it has to do with reading Kamala Subramanian's Mahabharata at an impressionable age. I was 10 when I read it. If I remember correctly, in the introduction, she does say that she took liberties with two scenes: the death of Radheya (as she refers to Karna) and the birth of Parikshit. I think she really got Karna - without editorializing too much - and she managed to pass it on effortlessly to some of us.<br /><br />As I grew older, my obsession with Karna dimmed.
